Here’s the raw truth that hit me during my morning run: If you woke up today, you’ve already won the lottery.
I was listening to Tina Turner’s “One of the Living” from Mad Max – that powerhouse anthem where she belts out how “the living will envy the dead.” Sounds dark, right? But stick with me because this song carries one hell of a message for anyone ready to stop playing victim to their circumstances.
You opened your eyes this morning. That’s not luck – that’s opportunity knocking.
I don’t care if you’re unemployed, facing health challenges, or watching your small business struggle through what’s been one of the toughest summers in years. I don’t care if you’re tired, scared, or feeling like the world’s against you.
You’re still here. You’re still breathing. You’re still one of the living.
And that means you’ve got another shot – not next week when things get easier, not next month when the economy improves, not next year when you finally get that promotion. TODAY.
The Hard Truth About Being “One of the Living”
We just lost my brother-in-law Jay this past week. Good man, great father, devoted husband – everything you’d want in a family member. He’s no longer one of the living, and watching what that does to a family… it puts things in perspective real fast.
Sometimes the living do envy the dead. The pain stops for them. But for those of us still here? We get to choose how we wake up each morning.
Choice 1: Focus on the loss, the pain, the unfairness of it all. Choice 2: Remember the good, hold onto the love, and recognize that you’re the one who still gets to make something happen.
Guess which choice moves you forward?
Stop Waiting for Perfect Conditions
“But Coach Lew,” you might say, “you don’t understand my situation. I’ve been through trauma. Things are different for me.”
I hear you. With all due respect to whatever hell you’ve walked through – and some of you have faced things no one should ever have to face – you’re still reading this. You’re still here.
That might be the only string you’re holding onto today, but it’s enough.
Your faith, your next breath, your ability to open your eyes tomorrow morning – sometimes that’s all you’ve got. But it’s everything you need to start.
The Innovation Imperative
Here’s what I’m seeing in the business world: This isn’t the time to coast. You can’t just show up to work like it’s 2019 and expect the same results.
If you’re not innovating right now – in your business, your career, your health, your relationships – you’re dying in that area of your life.
We can’t work any harder. We can’t cut any more expenses. So what’s left? We grow. We adapt. We innovate or we get left behind.
And yes, I’m talking to myself here too. We’re all facing challenges that force us to level up or give up.

The people who are no longer with us? They’d give anything for one more day with their kids, one more sunset, one more chance to tell someone they love them.
