What is FEAR?
Fear is what you make it!
Although that may be true when a catastrophe happens most of the time we make fear so much bigger than it really is!
When a tiger is running towards you that may be the time to recognize the clear and present danger, when your boss calls you to the office it certainly is not a clear and present danger to your life!
Fear has it’s purpose to alert you of something that needs you attention. Whether you blow the fear out of proportion or use it to be more alert is up to you.
Fear is not good nor bad. In the tiger example fear can save your life, in the boss example fear can paralyze you and make your life less than you desire!
When you are in a state of fear your responses are:
Fight: This engages your mind and body to prepare to fight. Your adrenaline is activated and every muscle is ready for the challenge.
Flight: This has a similar effect of stimulating your body and mind to be able to make a fast escape.
Freeze: This sometimes a good responses. In the case of the tiger encounter maybe you see him first, freeze and he carries on and leaves. In a situation where there is a tidal wave headed towards you this would be devastating but has happened where in an immediate threat someone just watches the treat over take them of someone else.
The biggest difference in how fear will affect your life is:
1) If it is a real threat, how you process and take control
2) If it is perceived threat and you let it paralyze you.
Fear is designed to be a primal response to save you from danger. The primal brain has one thing to do….keep you alive.
The biggest challenge is when we activate the primal fear and attach it to things that are not life or death!
Many people fear public speaking as much as death! Sad but true it feels that way to the person experiencing fear.
In the coming weeks we are going to understand how this fear will control you unless you take control of it. Then we will teach you to breakthrough the fear.
At the end of the month we are going to look forward and see what is possible when you breakthrough fear and discover what is on the other side.
For now I want to make sure you understand what fear really is.
Fear is an indicator that something needs your attention. Fear is rarely totally unfounded but most often blown way out of proportion.
Fear is a physiological chemical response in the body tied to a strong emotion interpretation.
The first step to taking control of fear is asking what does this really mean? Sometimes it means “run now”, most of the time it really means “I need to pay attention”.
I will leave you today with one thought….There is no way to never feel fear but there are ways to harness fear to propel you forward, help you to anticipate pitfalls and be more alert to current and possible scenarios!
Use the tool I gave you of asking what does this really mean? When you are in a fear state the answer may be “I don’t know that is why I am scared” so you can adjust the question to be what could this mean and then ask that in a fashion of the positive. For example going to the bosses office could mean you are getting fired(worst case) but is that something to fear as much as a deadly situation? Of course not, the truth is there are many other things such as he just needs clarification, has a question or maybe is going to give you a raise. I would be hard pressed to think every call to the bosses office means getting fired, as a matter of fact that is probably the least likely but yet it seems to be the go to worse case that sparks fear! Stop that pattern today by giving yourself options before you have a full out panic attack over something!
One more last thing… Have you ever feared something, been a wreck during anticipation and the it turned out to be an amazing experience or something that had a life long positive effect once you passed the fear? This is what I am talking about…setting you up to approach fear from this frame of reference!
My friends this is not always going to be an easy journey but I can’t stress enough that you get one life, this is not a rehearsal for the next go round! Live you life today like it matters because it does and it is the only one you get!
With that all said make sure to watch the video, take action today, get some coaching and step up to the life you desire and deserve!
