Done or Done Right?
The Hidden Tax of Rushing
Most people don’t have a time problem.
They have a standards problem.
My Dad used to hit me with a line that annoyed me as a kid—and now it’s one of the most profitable lessons I’ve ever learned:
“Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time… but there’s always time to go back and fix it?”
If that lands in your chest a little, good. Because it points to something we all do—at work, at home, in relationships, and even with our own goals.
We rush. We half-do it. We ship it. We tell ourselves we’ll “circle back.”
And then we pay.
Rushing is a hidden tax on your success
When you rush through something, you’re writing a check you will cash later.
Maybe it costs you:
- More time (redoing what you already did)
- More money (fixing mistakes, lost deals, missed details)
- More stress (panic, pressure, scrambling)
- More trust (people stop believing your word)
- More connection (your family feels you “there but not there”)
Call it what it is: the rush tax.
This isn’t about being obsessive or perfect. If you triple-check every tiny thing, nothing moves. But if you consistently do “good enough,” you’re building your life on sloppy execution.
And sloppy execution produces sloppy results.
The two standards: “Done” vs “Done Right”
Here’s the real question:
Are you a “done” person… or a “done right” person?
The “Done” person
- Checks boxes
- Avoids discomfort
- Wants relief now
- Uses the phrase “good enough” like it’s a strategy
But ask yourself:
Do you want a “good enough” employee? A “good enough” parent? A “good enough” partner?
Yeah… didn’t think so.
The “Done Right” person
- Has a clear outcome
- Plans with margin
- Owns the result (even when it goes sideways)
- Takes pride in what they put their name on
Because your standard isn’t just how you work.
Your standard is your signature.
The 5-step framework to do it right (without taking forever)
If you want something you can implement today, here’s the framework I shared on the show.
1) Start with the outcome (not the task)
Stop living inside to-do lists.
Before you list tasks, write the outcome.
Ask:
- What does winning look like when I’m finished?
- If I showed this to someone I respect, would I be proud?
- What’s the one “must” that makes this successful?
Sometimes you’ll hit the outcome by step 3 and realize steps 4–10 don’t matter. That’s not laziness—that’s clarity.
2) MAP it out + add white space
MAP = Mass Action Plan.
Know where you are, know where you’re going, then build the steps in between.
And for the love of God: add white space.
Because stuff happens. Power goes out. People don’t respond. Traffic explodes. Life shows up.
If your plan has zero margin, you’ll panic-rush and deliver something subpar just to “hit the time.”
3) Track the timeline as you go (kill open loops)
Don’t put off what can be completed now.
If it’s a 2–10 minute finish, knock it out.
Scheduling tiny tasks often takes as long as doing them—and open loops create mental clutter.
This is where you stop negotiating with yourself.
4) Review it against the outcome + do “one more thing”
Before you call it done, ask:
- Does this match the outcome I envisioned?
- Do I feel good putting my name on this?
- What’s one more thing I can do to make it amazing instead of good?
Not ten upgrades. One.
The jump from good to great is usually small—but it’s what makes you stand out.
5) Take the win and celebrate
High standards shouldn’t feel like a punishment.
They should feel rewarding.
Celebrate the win—because celebration reinforces identity:
“I’m the type of person who finishes strong.”
The 7-day challenge (do this starting today)
Pick one area:
- Health
- Business
- Relationships
- Home
Then:
- Define the outcome
- MAP it with white space
- Track it and finish small tasks fast
- Review + add “one more thing”
- Celebrate the win
Because here’s the truth:
Done is relief. Done right is respect.
And your life will rise—or fall—to meet your standard.
Your move
Where are you rushing right now?
What’s something you keep fixing because you didn’t do it right the first time?
